Press Release Regarding the Opening of Chapter 33 titled “Financial and Budgetary Provisions”

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Dışişleri Bakanlığı 28.06.2016

No: 147, 28 June 2016

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu will participate in the Intergovernmental Conference on Accession in Brussels on 30 June 2016, together with the Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik and the Minister of Finance Naci Ağbal in which the Chapter 33 titled “Financial and Budgetary Provisions” will be opened.

At the Third Turkey-EU Summit on 18 March, in the framework of our mutual decision on reviving the process of membership negotiations, it has been decided to open the “Financial and Budgetary Provisions” during the Term Presidency of the Netherlands which ends on 1 July. During the relevant Summit, it was also agreed that the preparation efforts for the opening of the other chapters will be accelerated.

The chapter in question will be the 16th chapter opened in the accession negotiations, after Chapter 17 titled “Economic and Monetary Policy” which was opened in December 2015.

We believe that the work for deepening and strengthening Turkey-EU relations should continue with a new determination, in line with the objective of EU membership, by lifting without further delay the political and artificial blockages placed before the blocked chapters.
